Investigators said Isiah Martinez was speeding when he crashed into a car on Cook Road. An 11-month-old boy was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene.
HOUSTON — A 19-year-old man is facing charges after Houston Police Department investigators said he crashed into a vehicle, killing an infant, on Wednesday.
Isiah Martinez is charged with failure to stop and render aid and driving while intoxicated.
According to HPD investigators, the crash happened around 6:30 p.m. at the intersection of Cook Road and Corona Lane.
They said Martinez was speeding southbound on Cook when he crashed into a car that had pulled onto Cook after turning off Corona. An 11-month-old boy was in the back seat of the car that was struck. He was ejected from the car during the crash and pronounced dead at the scene, HPD said.
The child’s 27-year-old mother was driving the car. She suffered minor injuries and is expected to survive.
After the impact, Martinez and a passenger ran from the scene, according to HPD. They said found the passenger, who convinced Martinez to return to the scene.
Investigators said Martinez was impaired and was arrested and charged.
Martinez was due in court on Thursday afternoon.
The child’s identity hasn’t been released.
