SAN MARCOS, Texas (KXAN) —A scooter company that services San Marcos could be gone soon.

According to a press release from the the city of San Marcos, Spin, which is an e-scooter company, notified the city that they intend to cease operations.

The city, in partnership with Texas State University, signed the original contract with Spin in September 2021.

Spin’s current contract is expected to end on June 30, according to the press release from San Marcos.

“On campus I am usually walking, but it is a trouble with all the hills,” said Juan Castrejon, a student at Texas State.

Castrejon said he does not use the scooters a lot, but he said they can be convenient.

“I have used them to ride home if I miss the bus,” Castrejon said.

KXAN spoke with a few people on campus at Texas State, some people said they did use the scooters, while the majority said they did not.

A San Marcos city spokesperson told KXAN that, Spin cited low ridership levels and the impact of tariffs on device and spare part availability as reasons for the decision to not renew a contract.

Julianna Rodriguez works on the San Marcos square. She said she hopes the city will find a new vendor and continue offering a similar service.

A city spokesperson tells KXAN that they have been in contact with Spin to discuss the possibility of the company’s continued operations in the community.

The city says they are prepared to move forward with the process to select a new vendor to provide micro mobility services if Spin does not renew.
