Police said the man stole the car from a couple at gunpoint early Wednesday morning.
HOUSTON — A man is in custody after he stole a car from a couple and shot at officers during a chase early Wednesday morning, according to the Houston Police Department.
The incident started outside an apartment complex near the intersection of Westheimer Road and Stoney Brook Drive around 2 a.m.
Police said an 18-year-old man and a 16-year-old girl were just getting home from church and were parallel parking near their apartment when a man approached their vehicle and pointed a revolver at the girl’s stomach. HPD said he demanded that she give him her belongings.
The man ended up taking the keys to the car and driving off with it. HPD said officers quickly located the stolen car and initiated a chase.
At the start of the chase, HPD said the suspect stuck the gun outside the window and opened fire toward the officers behind him. Fortunately, police said no one was hit.
At some point, the chase came to an end at an apartment complex on Woodchase Drive just south of Richmond Avenue. Police said the man ran through the apartment complex with the gun before officers used a Taser on him and took him into custody.
HPD said the man appeared to be under the influence of drugs. They said there are a lot of charges pending against the man, but did not specify what exactly he will be charged with.
No officers were hurt in the incident.
“Officers did an outstanding job, as they always do,” said HPD Lt. R. Willkens.
