DJ, the Pearland boy who has been sworn in as an honorary member of more than 1,300 law enforcement agencies across the country, received another honor recently.
HOUSTON — Southside Place is ensuring that everyone who passes by knows the name of Devarjay “DJ” Daniel, a young cancer fighter hailed as a symbol of hope and courage.
DJ, the Pearland boy who has been sworn in as an honorary member of more than 1,300 law enforcement agencies across the country, received another honor recently.
On Tuesday, DJ was recognized as an honorary officer for the city of Southside Place. After being sworn in, Daniel humorously inquired about when he would receive his salary and joked about his love for donuts, wishing to have his belly hang over his duty belt.
Adding to his accolades, a street will soon have his name.
“I got a street named after me. You don’t see that every day,” he said.
Additionally, June 10, 2025, has been proclaimed “Devarjay DJ Daniel Day” in his honor.
At just 13 years old, DJ has become a national symbol of resilience, battling brain cancer and enduring 13 brain surgeries.
Despite the challenges, he remains upbeat.
“I ain’t gonna lie, I feel like I’m about to fall over, but I’m not,” DJ said.
His father, Theodis Daniel, shared that DJ is awaiting MRI results after doctors discovered three new tumors. Amidst the fight, the family has faced false reports and rumors online.
“They said that he had passed away twice. They said he wasn’t doing so good in the hospital. and now that, he had surgery,” Daniel said.
DJ remains focused on spreading joy and positivity.
“Stay safe. Believe in God. Take care of your family,” he said. “I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for my dad.”
Daniel hopes that the street named after his son will inspire others.
“Hopefully, when they see that street name up, there is a DJ Daniel’s way of street. They come in and just reflect on everything that he’s done and what he stands for,” he said.
It hasn’t been decided which street will be named after DJ. Two signs have been ordered so that DJ can keep one of them.
Daniel said they’re planning to host a concert and those details will be announced soon.
