Men arrested for sneaking into Astrodome

Security guards spotted the men going into the Astrodome. When law enforcement got there, they took the 18-year-olds into custody and charged them with trespassing.

HOUSTON — Three 18-year-olds were arrested after sneaking into the Astrodome, according to Harris County Precinct 1 Constable Alan Rosen.

The Dome has been closed to the public since 2009.

“Sneaking into closed old historic buildings is dangerous,” Rosen said. “You are taking a risk for yourself and first responders, and it is against the law.”

According to a post on social media, security guards spotted the men just after midnight and contacted law enforcement authorities.

A short time later, the alleged intruders were seen running across a parking lot and jumping a fence near the intersection of Fannin and Holly Hall. That’s where they were taken into custody.

The men were charged with trespassing.

When the Astrodome opened in 1965, it was the world’s first air-conditioned domed stadium.

It was home to Astros and Oilers until the Oilers left town and the Astros moved to a new stadium in downtown Houston. The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo was held in the Astrodome until it moved to what is now NRG Stadium.

The last professional game played at the Astrodome was on Oct. 9, 1999, when the Astros lost to the Braves in the National League Division Series.

The Oilers last played at the Dome in 1996.
