Court records show Zion Makai Sawyer-Alford, 21, was sentenced to 180 days in jail in October for assaulting a judge.
HOUSTON — We’ve learned new details about the man accused of stabbing his mother repeatedly and killing her on Saturday, June 7.
Zion Makai Sawyer-Alford, 21, is charged with murder. He’s being held on a $750,000 bond.
The victim has been identified as Lydia Hughes, a 65-year-old grandmother of six.
According to court documents, Hughes was stabbed multiple times in her face, head, chest, legs and back at the Bellfort Plaza apartments on Bellfort Avenue in southeast Houston.
Officers said Sawyer-Alford fought with them before they entered the apartment and discovered the bloody scene. HPD’s initial reports at the scene said the suspect may have been off his medication for schizophrenia.
Initial reports said Hughes was the suspect’s grandmother, but court documents say she was his mother. Family members at the scene said the suspect and his mother were close.
Detectives are working to find out what led up to the deadly stabbing.
Court records show he was sentenced to 180 days in the Harris County Jail last October after pleading guilty to assaulting a judge.
