Houston grand jury reviews deadly June 3 shooting

A Harris County grand jury is reviewing a deadly shooting in north Houston that left Joshua Fowlkes dead.

HOUSTON — A deadly shooting in north Houston is now under review by a Harris County grand jury, according to investigators with the Houston Police Department.

Editor’s note: Police told KHOU 11 Wednesday morning that the shooting victim was a McDonald’s employee who was not working at the time. However, after our initial report, a spokesperson for the restaurant contacted KHOU 11, and said that neither the victim nor the alleged assailant is employed at the restaurant. HPD released an update on Monday, June 9, clarifying that employees of a nearby McDonald’s were not involved in the incident, and the shooting did not take place at the restaurant or on its property.

The victim has been identified as 30-year-old Joshua Fowlkes. Officers initially responded to reports of a shooting around 10:25 p.m. on Tuesday, June 3, at 400 North Sam Houston Parkway East, but found no victims or suspects after canvassing the area.

Shortly afterward, officers were called to a nearby apartment complex on  Imperial Valley Drive, where they found Fowlkes suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Houston Fire Department paramedics transported him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A preliminary investigation revealed that Fowlkes was involved in an argument that escalated into a confrontation in a parking lot. During the incident, a man opened fire, hitting Fowlkes multiple times before leaving in an unknown vehicle.

Police clarified that employees of a nearby McDonald’s were not involved in the incident, and the shooting did not take place at the restaurant or on its property.

The suspected shooter later surrendered at the Harris County Jail. After an interview with detectives and consultation with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, officials determined the case would be presented to a grand jury for review.

Anyone with additional information is urged to contact the Houston Police Department.
