The city is describing the spill as domestic wastewater. Repairs are underway.
ENNIS, Texas — The city of Ennis is notifying the public of an overflow from the sewer system, causing hundreds of thousands of gallons of wastewater to spill out.
According to the city, between 200,000 and 450,000 gallons of domestic wastewater spilled out on Thursday afternoon near 801 S. Jeter Drive.
The suspected cause of the spill is pressure pipe leakage near the Liska Lift Station, the city said.
Cleanup efforts are underway, officials said, and include removing any standing contaminated water and waste debris, as well as the use of weak disinfection to sanitize the area.
Anyone using private drinking water supply wells within half a mile of the spill site or within possibly affected areas are advised to only use distilled or boiled water for drinking, cooking, bathing and tooth brushing. Boiled water should be boiled for at least one minute.
The city is advising anyone who buys water from a public water supply to contact their distributor to determine if the water is safe to use.
The public is advised to avoid contact with any material in the area potentially affected by the spill. Anyone who does come into contact with it should bathe and wash their clothes thoroughly as soon as possible.
