BANGKOK, Thailand– A hungry wild elephant created havoc in a supermarket in Thailand on Monday when he walked in from a neighboring national park and assisted himself to food on the racks.
Video clips of the case showed the massive man elephant, called Plai Biang Lek, briefly stopping in front of the shop, located beside a highway near the Khao Yai National forest in northeastern Thailand, prior to eluding his whole body inside.
The elephant dropped in front of the store’s counter, smoothly nabbing and chomping snacks, and did not flinch as the national park workers tried to shoo him away.
The elephant later backed out of the store still holding a bag of treats with his trunk. He left little damage behind, except mud tracks on the flooring and the ceiling of the shop.
In a video published on social networks, Kamploy Kakaew, the shop owner, showed up amused as she described the minute the elephant rifled her store. She said he ate about 9 bags of sweet rice biscuits, a sandwich and some dried bananas she had purchased that early morning.
Kamploy claimed the elephant left without injuring anybody after getting his snacks.
Danai Sookkanthachat, a volunteer park worker familiar with the elephant, stated Plai Biang Lek, that has to do with 30 years of ages, is a familiar sight in the area and has been known to go into people’s houses trying to find food. This was the first time he had seen him entering into a supermarket.
