Devonte Dejon Howard was sentenced to 65 years for the 2022 murder of Miguel Granados Jr., marking Fort Bend County’s second murder conviction this month.
FORT BEND COUNTY, Texas — A 31-year-old Richmond man was sentenced to more than six decades in prison about a week after a jury found him guilty of murder.
Devonte Dejon Howard was given a 65-year prison sentence for shooting a man to death in 2022.
Miguel Granados Jr. was shot and killed by Howard on April 10, 2022.
Granados was repairing a fence that afternoon shared between Howard’s home and his neighbor’s.
Howard shot the repairman multiple times and then left the scene. Granados died at the scene.
Howard eventually turned himself in and told investigators where to find the gun he used.
“A jury of twelve Fort Bend County citizens heard details of Devonte Howard’s actions and returned a verdict of justice for the family of Miguel Granados Jr.,” lead prosecutor Janie Korah said. “Their verdict helps keep our residents safe and protects our communities.”
It’s the second murder conviction secured by Fort Bend County District Attorney’s Office prosecutors this month.
Last week, Fort Bend County District Attorney Brian M. Middleton announced that Anthony Sorel Haywood, 44, was sentenced to life in prison for killing his estranged girlfriend, Coralyn “Shae” Hunt.
“Two murder convictions a week apart – a life sentence and a 65-year sentence. My prosecutors and staff work tirelessly to achieve justice alongside the dedicated law enforcement officers who respond to the call for help and seek out the truth,” Middleton said. “And I am grateful for the citizens of our county who sit in the jury box day after day, hearing some of the most horrible things they will ever hear, and seeing that justice is done. We are stronger together.”
Howard was facing up to life in prison. He will be eligible for parole after serving half of his sentence.
