Ex-SWAT officer arrested after SWAT standoff outside his Fort Worth home, officials say

Alexander Smith, who served as a member of the Mesquite Police Department’s tactical team, was arrested after an hours-long SWAT standoff, officials said.

FORT WORTH, Texas — A former SWAT officer with the Mesquite Police Department was arrested after an hours-long SWAT standoff, which started after he threatened a family member with a gun, officials said.

Officers responded around 8:20 p.m. on Friday, May 1, to a home in the 3800 block of Chisos Rim Trail and found that the victim was being threatened with a handgun, the Fort Worth Police Department said in a press release.

When officers arrived, they learned that the suspect, identified as Alexander Smith, shot a gun inside the residence, officials said. The Mesquite Police Department confirmed in a statement that Smith was employed as a police officer there from Nov. 2007 to Dec. 2018. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported he served as a member of the department’s tactical team, officials said.

The victim told police that Smith barricaded himself in a bedroom and said he would not go down without a fight, according to the press release.

Fort Worth’s Directed Response Unit and SWAT were called to assist and took the suspect into custody several hours later without incident, police said.

Police seized several weapons from the property and filed for an emergency protective order.

Smith was charged with deadly conduct, according to court documents.
