Fort Worth man opens fire on truck after traffic accident, 17-year-old victim isn’t expected to survive, police say

An altercation at a stoplight led to a shooting on Seminary Drive Saturday, Fort Worth police said.

FORT WORTH, Texas — A 17-year-old likely won’t survive after he was shot in a road rage incident, Fort Worth police said.

Officers responded at about 11:40 p.m. on Saturday, May 23, in the 3000 block of Mansfield Highway, the Fort Worth Police Department said in a press release.

When police arrived, officers from Forest Hill were already on the scene and had located the victim in the front passenger seat of a vehicle, suffering from a gunshot wound to the head, the release states. The victim was taken to a hospital in critical condition. He currently is not exhibiting any brain activity and is not expected to survive, police said. A suspect has been arrested in connection with the shooting.

The other people in the victim’s car told police they were involved in a collision with a gray or brown Chevy Avalanche with oversized chrome wheels, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by WFAA. After the crash, police said both vehicles were stopped at a red light when someone in the Avalanche began shooting at them.

Investigators found that before the shooting, two separate vehicles were involved in an altercation at the intersection of Mansfield Highway and Seminary Drive, officials said. The vehicles then travelled Westbound on Seminary Drive, where the suspect vehicle shot the victim’s vehicle, hitting the front right passenger.

The victim’s vehicle pulled over, and the suspect sped away, the release states.

Police then used license plate reading cameras to identify the vehicle, linking it to Jose Alfredo Camargo Madrigal, 31, the affidavit states. Officers identified the residence connection with the suspect and later saw a vehicle leave the home and run a stop sign, leading police to conduct a traffic stop.

The incident remains under investigation and appears to be isolated, officials said.

Camargo Madrigal was identified as the passenger in the vehicle and agreed to come with the police to their office, according to the affidavit.

In an interview, the suspect told police he and his family were driving to the store to pick up baby formula when they were involved in a crash with a dark colored truck and continued driving, police said. When stopped, he admitted to getting out of his truck and firing multiple rounds into the back of the truck, officials said.

Police charged Madrigal with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. If the victim does not survive, Fort Worth police said his charges will be upgraded to murder.
