The earthquake was detected on Hawaii’s Big Island but did not generate a tsunami threat, according to emergency officials.
HAWAII, USA — A magnitude 6.0 earthquake rattled Hawaii’s Big Island on Friday night, but it did not trigger a tsunami threat.
The earthquake was detected around 9:45 p.m. Hawaii Standard Time and was felt on the Island of Hawaii, Maui and Oahu, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The origin of the quake was still being investigated Saturday morning, but its depth is estimated at roughly 16 miles below sea level.
The U.S. Tsunami Warning System confirmed that the earthquake did not trigger a tsunami warning, advisory, watch or threat.
Minor to moderate damage from the earthquake is possible, the USGS reported.
