Lewisville Police Department relaunches motorcycle unit to boost traffic safety on city streets

The Lewisville Police Department has relaunched its Motorcycle Unit with two specially trained officers.

LEWISVILLE, Texas — The Lewisville Police Department announced Friday the relaunch of its Motorcycle Unit.

It’ll start with two officers who will focus on  improving traffic safety and mobility across the city’s surface streets, the department said.

Department officials added that the unit is designed to provide a more visible law enforcement presence while addressing traffic concerns, particularly in school zones and neighborhoods.

Officials said motorcycle officers have several advantages over traditional patrol vehicles, including increased maneuverability in congested traffic and improved access to the areas they’ll be targeting.

The officers have received specialized training and are equipped with updated technology, including advanced speed-monitoring equipment and upgraded communication systems, according to the department.

The Motorcycle Unit was disbanded several years ago and while an exact reason isn’t documented the department said, they recognized the need for reinstating it as a well-rounded program. That included evaluating policies, training, equipment, and operational needs.

The relaunch initiative was created using existing funding for the department.
