United flight from New Jersey to Guatemala diverted due to ‘unruly passenger’

A United Airlines flight to Guatemala City was diverted to Dulles Airport due to an unruly passenger, leading to the flight’s cancellation, according to the FBI.

DULLES, Va. — A United Airlines flight headed to Guatemala was diverted on Thursday following reports of an “unruly passenger.”

Passengers on board United Airlines flight 1551, which departed from Newark, New Jersey, were diverted to  Dulles Airport in Virginia. Very few details about the incident have been released at this time.

WUSA9 reached out to United Airlines to get more clarity on what “unruly” meant and the specific cause of the diversion. The airline did not elaborate, but it said no injuries were reported onboard.

The United flight was cancelled, and a replacement flight was added for Friday morning. Passengers aboard the plane were provided with overnight accommodations.

The FBI released a statement confirming that agents responded to Dulles, but did not have any additional information to provide beyond that.

There was a total of 145 passengers and six crew members on the flight.
