A young man was shot and killed outside a north Harris County apartment complex as detectives review surveillance video and interview witnesses.
HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A young man was shot and killed outside a north Harris County apartment complex late Thursday night, and investigators are still working to determine who was responsible and what led up to the gunfire.
Harris County Sheriff’s Office homicide investigators said the shooting happened shortly before midnight at the Marybell Apartments on Imperial Valley near Parramatta Lane.
Deputies and EMS crews responded to the scene and found a man who had been shot multiple times.
“They attempted life-saving measures. He could not be saved. He died on scene,” Sgt. Michael Ritchie with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said.
Investigators said homicide detectives spent hours interviewing witnesses and reviewing surveillance video to identify the people involved and a possible getaway vehicle.
Authorities said they were still trying to confirm details about the vehicle before releasing additional information publicly.
“At this point, no motive or suspect information right at this time,” Ritchie said. “Again, we’re still reviewing camera footage. We’re still talking with witnesses.”
The victim’s mother pleaded for anyone with information to contact investigators.
“I just want to let anyone know if y’all know anything or did y’all see anything, would y’all please get in contact with the police?” she said. “Anything helps.”
She said her 21-year-old son had just returned home from work and had allowed a woman inside the apartment to use the restroom before the shooting happened outside.
“When they ended up back here, the young lady ended up taking his life with whoever she was with,” she said.
Investigators, however, said they could not yet confirm whether the suspect was male or female or how many shots were fired.
The victim’s mother said witnesses told her the people involved had been taking pictures together before the shooting.
“So to me, I feel like it was a setup,” she said.
A nearby resident who heard the gunfire said he and a friend were playing video games when the shooting began.
“We heard gunshots and a car take off,” the witness said. “When I heard that, about 15 or 20 gunshots went through.”
The witness said he later followed police into the apartment complex parking lot and saw officers performing CPR on the victim before they stopped lifesaving efforts.
Investigators said the medical examiner’s office would perform an autopsy as detectives continue working to identify everyone involved in the shooting.
