Police are investigating a reported shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego. Here’s what we know about the location.
SAN DIEGO — Police are at an Islamic center in San Diego, California, after a reported shooting around noon local time. Here’s what we know about where the reported shooting was.
The Islamic Center of San Diego describes itself as the largest mosque in San Diego County on its website.
“Our mission is to serve the religious needs of the San Diego Muslim population and work with the larger community to serve the less fortunate, to educate, and to better our nation,” the center’s website said.
The mosque also holds regular activities like five daily prayers, Friday prayer and sermon, educational talks and seminars and events for the Muslim community. The Islamic center also has a school and playground on the property.
The mosque was built in the 90s based on Robert E. Des Lauriers design. When it was only a mosque, it was originally called the Abu Bakr Al Siddiq Mosque, according to Chasing Churches.
The center has roughly 5,000 members as part of its congregation and works with other mosques in the greater San Diego region.
