Goldee’s barbecue in Fort Worth featured on Binging With Babish

FORT WORTH, Texas — A popular YouTube cooking show paid a visit to a renowned North Texas barbecue spot and released the results of its taste test findings this week.

Binging With Babish, a YouTube cooking channel known at least in part for its videos in which it recreates dishes from popular movies and TV shows based in New York, has 10.4 million subscribers and has evolved into a brand with cookbooks and kitchen products. 

And, most recently, it filmed an episode at Goldee’s Barbecue in Fort Worth to see if it lived up to the hype. The renowned spot, after all, just came in third this year on Texas Monthly’s list of the top 10 barbecue restaurants in the state after a previous stint at number one. 

The visit, conducted by channel host Andrew Rea (also known as Babish after the Oliver Babish character from “The West Wing”) appears to have happened shortly before Texas Monthly released its new list, however, as some commenters pointed out that the video’s “I Tried The #1 Texas BBQ (Goldee’s)” title was no longer fully accurate. 

Still, how did Babish enjoy his visit to Goldee’s? 

In short, he called it “some of the best” barbecue he’d ever had. 

While at Goldee’s, Rea also interviewed Goldee’s co-owner Jalen Heard, who has been friends with his fellow co-owner since they were in fifth grade, as well as some of the folks who were lined up outside for barbecue. 

Once inside and ready to chow down, he tried the pork belly, pork and beef ribs, turkey, pulled pork, Laotian sausage and more — as well as desserts of bread pudding and banana pudding (which, notably, is made sans bananas). 

Of course, it wasn’t just the food he was into during his trip. He also appreciated the journey — his own and that of the food on his plate.

“This food is a story,” Rea said of his experience. “It’s heritage, it’s time and effort, it’s practice, it’s trial and error.”
