Cruise ship passenger dies after driving mobility scooter off pier in the Bahamas

The Carnival Cruise Line ship was docked at Celebration Key, a private destination in the Bahamas.

BAHAMAS, — A cruise ship passenger died after driving her mobility scooter off a pier in the Bahamas, officials said.

The incident took place on May 9 when a Carnival Cruise ship was docked at Celebration Key, a private destination in the Bahamas, according to USA Today.

The Royal Bahamas Police Force said it is investigating the suspected drowning of an 88-year-old American woman. In a news release, police said the woman lost control of the scooter and drove off the pier. Police believe the woman struck her head against the hull of the ship before entering the water.

The woman was retrieved from the water and transported to the ship’s medical facility for emergency treatment. Police say that despite efforts to save her life, the woman succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead. An autopsy will be performed, police said.

USA Today reported that the ship was in the middle of a week-long Eastern Caribbean cruise when the incident occurred.

This is the most recent in a line of bad press for cruise ships. Recently, several people died from hantavirus amid an outbreak on a separate cruise ship, a woman died after falling from a Carnival Cruise balcony, and a 16-year-old was charged with killing his stepsister aboard a cruise ship.
