Amazon confirmed the long-awaited romantasy adaptation at its upfront presentation Monday, with “Westworld” co-creator Lisa Joy set to direct the pilot.
After nearly three years in development, “Fourth Wing” is finally heading to television.
Prime Video announced Monday that it has ordered Rebecca Yarros’ bestselling dragon-rider novel to series, with the news coming during Amazon’s upfront presentation in New York City.
Executive producer and Oscar winner Michael B. Jordan made the announcement onstage, then introduced fellow executive producer Lisa Joy, who will direct the first episode.
Based on Yarros’ “The Empyrean” romantasy book series, “Fourth Wing” follows 20-year-old Violet Sorrengail, who is forced by her mother, a general in the military, to join the cutthroat and deadly Basgiath War College and become a dragon rider in the kingdom of Navarre.
Yarros’ Empyrean series began with the release of “Fourth Wing” in May 2023, followed by “Iron Flame” in November 2023 and “Onyx Storm” in January 2025. The series is planned as five books total.
“Fourth Wing” became a viral phenomenon within TikTok’s “BookTok” community and stayed atop the New York Times bestseller list for 18 weeks.
The series will be available exclusively on Prime Video. No cast members or premiere date have been announced.
Jordan’s Outlier Society production company, Jonathan Nolan and Joy’s Kilter Films and Premeditated Productions are all involved in the series. Meredith Averill, known for “The Haunting of Hill House,” will serve as showrunner and executive producer, while Joy — co-creator of HBO’s “Westworld” — will direct the pilot episode. Author Rebecca Yarros will executive produce.
“We’re building a cinematic world,” Joy said at Amazon’s upfront presentation Monday, with the goal “to deliver the series this fandom deserves.”
“Rebecca’s books have become one of the fastest-selling franchises of the 21st century, with a fandom so passionate, so devoted, they don’t just read these books, they live in them,” Averill said. “The emotional stakes are sky high, the battles are epic, power dynamics are thrilling, and underneath it is so much humor and heart and a romance that will consume you.”
First put into development in October 2023, the project stalled until last September, when Averill joined as showrunner.
