Houston World Cup hotel demand falling short of expectations as tournament nears

Houston hotels abandoned minimum-stay requirements and nonrefundable policies to attract travelers.

HOUSTON — With one month until the 2026 FIFA World Cup officially kicks off, Houston hoteliers are not seeing the booking demand they expected coming into the tournament.

The pace of hotel bookings in the Houston market — which stretches from The Woodlands to Texas City and features over 100,000 hotel rooms — is ahead of the same period last year for June and July, according to data from Houston First Corp. As of May 1, bookings are up 9.1% for June and about 11% for July.

The gains are most pronounced in the downtown submarket, where booking pace is up 38% in June and 63% in July. This was to be expected given the inventory and amenities downtown, as well as its proximity to the World Cup fan festival in East Downtown, said Houston First President and CEO Michael Heckman.
