Houstonians flood flower shops for Mother’s Day

For many shoppers, the day served as a reminder to celebrate mothers not only on Mother’s Day, but year-round.

HOUSTON — Mother’s Day brought a rush of customers to flower shops across Houston on Sunday as families picked up bouquets and arrangements to celebrate the moms in their lives.

At Fannin Flowers near Houston’s Museum District, workers stayed busy throughout the day helping customers fill orders as long lines stretched through the store.

The shop’s manager told KHOU 11 they have sold more than 45,000 roses since Friday alone.

Inside the store, customers browsed colorful bouquets and custom arrangements while others waited to grab last-minute flowers before Mother’s Day celebrations.

Among them was Yvette Columbus, who said she was shopping for the “mother of our church.”

“I come here because I can get a little bit more variety and creativity,” Columbus said.

She said her church planned to hand out roses to mothers during Sunday celebrations.

“Our church is presenting every mother with a rose today,” she said.

The holiday rush also brought in plenty of husbands and fathers shopping for loved ones.

Jake Barajas said he stopped by to pick up flowers for his wife while she was still asleep at home.

“So, these are for my wife who’s at home right now, sleeping hopefully,” Barajas said.

Another customer, John Martinez, brought along his young son while shopping for his wife.

“Mama likes sunflowers, right?” Martinez asked his son while looking through the arrangements.

When asked if he had a message for his wife, Martinez replied, “Happy Mother’s Day, and it’s also her birthday.”

“Yes, double whammy,” he added with a laugh.

William Jackson also visited the flower shop with his 4-year-old daughter to find arrangements for both his wife and his mother.

“So, this is for my beautiful wife; she deserves everything she’s going to get on this beautiful day,” Jackson said.

Jackson said one particular arrangement stood out to him immediately.

“It was big and beautiful and blossomed; it caught my eye,” he said.

For many shoppers, the day served as a reminder to celebrate mothers not only on Mother’s Day, but year-round.

“They brought us into this world, and I think everybody here appreciates their mom and wife,” Jackson said.
