Bonnie Tyler recovering after emergency intestinal surgery

The Welsh singer is most known for her 1980s hit “Total Eclipse of the Heart” and “Holding Out for a Hero.”

WASHINGTON — Singer Bonnie Tyler is in an induced coma after undergoing emergency surgery in Portugal, according to reports. 

The “Total Eclipse of the Heart” singer was hospitalized for emergency intestinal surgery in Faro, Portugal, according to an official statement shared on Wednesday, May 6. Tyler, 74, has a home in Portugal. 

“We are very sorry to announce that Bonnie has been admitted to hospital in Faro, Portugal, where she has a home, for emergency intestinal surgery,”  the official statement read. “The surgery went well and she is now recuperating. We know that all of her family, friends, and fans will be concerned about this news and will be wishing her well for a full and swift recovery.”

Her representative told Entertainment Weekly on Thursday that Tyler is in an induced coma to aid her recovery.

Tyler’s team did not disclose what type of procedure the 74-year-old singer had done. 

The Welsh singer is most known for her 1980s hit “Total Eclipse of the Heart” and “Holding Out for a Hero.” Her early breakthrough came through hits like “Lost in France” and “It’s a Heartache.” She became the first British female artist to debut at number one on the UK Albums Chart and remains the only Welsh artist to have a number one on the UK Singles Chart. 

In 2024, the singer told “Good Morning America” that she still gets “excited” when “Total Eclipse of the Heart” comes on the radio, especially if there’s an actual eclipse.

“Every time the eclipse comes, everyone all over the world, they play ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’ and I never get tired of singing it,” she told GMA at the time. 

She has released 18 studio albums throughout her career. Her last album “The Best is Yet to Come” was released in 2021. 

Tyler is scheduled to perform in Malta on May 22 at the SummerLUST Music Festival. Additionally, she has tour dates in Germany, Hungary, Czechia, Scotland and Turkey.
