Ellis County sheriff’s deputies responded to the call Wednesday afternoon, leading to the incident, which is being investigated by the Texas Rangers.
RED OAK, Texas — The Ellis County Sheriff’s Office has announced a shooting involving one of its deputies, which ended in the death of a suspect involved in a disturbance call Wednesday afternoon in Red Oak.
Sheriff Brad Norman of Ellis County wrote in a release late Wednesday that the suspect was transported to an area hospital after the shooting. A standoff occurred after a deputy commanded an adult male to drop a firearm when deputies arrived at a residence in the 100 block of Carol Lane after being dispatched at approximately 3:30 p.m.
Classified as a disturbance call, initial reports had a witness hearing what was believed to be yelling and a firearm being discharged. Another separate call to 911 stated that an adult male was actively threatening self-harm, according to Sheriff Norman.
As deputies arrived on scene, the encounter with the adult male with the firearm ensued and the suspect was said to refuse to comply to the deputy’s orders and went on to point his firearm at the deputy, which led to the shooting.
According to Sheriff Norman, medical treatment was provided to the suspect until emergency medical first responders arrived. The suspect was transported to the hospital where he died.
“Anytime an incident like this occurs, it impacts everyone involved — including the individuals on scene, their families, the responding deputies, and the community,” Sheriff Norman said in the statement.
Sheriff Norman went on to say that the Texas Rangers have been requested to lead in an investigation into the incident, “in accordance with standard protocol and in the interest of transparency.”
