The United flight had been carrying more than 200 passengers and 10 crew members to New Jersey from Venice, Italy, when it struck a delivery truck.
WASHINGTON — A passenger airplane that was landing at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey toppled a utility pole and apparently clipped a delivery truck on the New Jersey Turnpike on Sunday afternoon, causing the truck to flip.
The plane landed safely, and no serious injuries were reported as of Monday morning, but dashcam footage shows the chaotic moment when the landing gear appears to have struck the vehicle.
The unsuspecting delivery driver was singing to himself when he was sharply interrupted by the high-pitched roar of a jumbo jet and a sudden crash, as a United plane ripped his truck just outside the airport.
United Flight 169, which was carrying more than 200 passengers and 10 crew members to New Jersey from Venice, Italy, had apparently hit a streetlight before its landing gear clipped the delivery truck.
Inside the flight, the damage had little impact. No one onboard the Boeing 767 reported injuries, and the plane landed normally after a nine-hour flight, according to United.
But for the delivery truck driver, the crash was more severe. According to New Jersey State Police, the driver was taken to the hospital with “non-life-threatening injuries.”
CNN obtained the dashcam video of the crash from Chuck Paterakis, a transportation executive at the Baltimore-based H&S Bakery.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the National Transportation Safety Board was leading an investigation into the crash.
“While on approach to land at Newark Liberty International Airport, United Airlines Flight 169 struck a light pole on the New Jersey Turnpike,” the FAA wrote about the crash Sunday in its accident and incident log.
New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill acknowledged the crash on social media Sunday, adding information about the truck and an internal investigation from United.
“I’m grateful the aircraft landed safely, and all passengers and crew are unharmed,” Sherrill wrote. “Initial reports indicate that a truck on the Turnpike may also have been involved, and we will continue to monitor developments.”
Officials with the port authority confirmed that an object was struck and that a delivery truck on the turnpike at the time also was damaged. Minor damage to the aircraft was observed, airport staff inspected the runway for debris and normal operations were quickly resumed, according to the port authority.
United said its maintenance team was evaluating damage to the aircraft and that the crew was removed from service while it conducts a “rigorous” flight safety investigation.
The NTSB said an investigator would arrive in Newark on Monday and that it had directed United to provide the cockpit voice recorder and the flight data recorder for the investigation.
A preliminary report was expected within 30 days, the NTSB said.
