A Houston family is voicing their frustration after their luggage was lost amid Spirit Airline shutting down.
HOUSTON — A Houston family is scrambling to find their lost luggage after Spirit Airlines shut its doors early Saturday morning.
“My son and daughter-in-law and my granddaughter flew out to Orlando [Friday] morning early and got to Orlando, and their luggage didn’t make it,” said Paul Ahrens.
Ahrens said the family was traveling to Florida for his granddaughter’s cheer tournament. He showed up at Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport Saturday morning amid the news of Spirit’s closing to try and get some answers.
“He’s filed a claim and they said their luggage is still here,” Ahrens said. “I’ve gone down to their office and it’s locked up and there’s nobody that we could talk to about getting into the office to get his lost luggage.”
He said it’s been difficult to get in touch with the now-closed airline.
“I got here about 6:30 this morning and just have talked to everybody, I’ve gotten some phone numbers for the Spirit Airlines handling office and it’s just a recorded ‘Mailbox is full,'” Ahrens said. “I haven’t been able to talk to anybody from Spirit to see about getting into their baggage claim office.”
He said the disruption is causing his family frustration and anxiety.
“She performs this afternoon, and I think she’s got her uniform and everything, but they don’t have any change of clothes or anything,” Ahrens said. “I know a lot of industries go through rough times and everything, but, you know, to shut it down and not have anybody here to kind of wrap it up and close everything out is very frustrating.”
Fortunately, the family isn’t stuck in Orlando. Several airlines are stepping up to offer deals for travelers impacted by Spirit’s closing.
