Alabama Street closed from Chenevert to St. Emanuel until February for bridge demolition | See detours

The closure started on April 30 at 7 p.m. and will last until February 8, 2027.

HOUSTON — Alabama Street will be closed from Chenevert Street to St. Emanuel Street until February of next year as crews work on a reconstruction project, including the demolition of the bridge over I-69.

The closure started on April 30 at 7 p.m. and will last until February 8, 2027.

The Texas Department of Transportation is highlighting detours for drivers and pedestrians navigating the area:

      • Turn left on Emancipation Avenue
      • Turn right on Cleburne Street
      • Turn right on Almeda Road
      • Turn left back onto Alabama Street
    • Alabama Street Eastbound
      • Turn right on Almeda Road
      • Turn left on Cleburne Street
      • Turn left on Emancipation Avenue
      • Turn right back onto Alabama Street
  • Pedestrians
    • Alabama Street Westbound
      • Turn left on Hutchins Street
      • Turn right on Wheeler Avenue

TxDOT says the Alabama Street bridge demolition over I-69 will take place over two phases.

The first phase starts at 9 p.m. on May 1 and will last through Monday, May 4 at 5 a.m. The I-69 northbound lanes from SH 288 to Alabama Street will be closed during this phase.

The second phase is set to start at 9 p.m. on May 8 and run through May 11 at 5 a.m. The I-69 southbound lanes from Polk Street to SH 288 will be shut down during this phase.

Crews will then rebuild the bridge.
