An 18-wheeler crash has shut down westbound I-10 East in Houston, causing major delays.

HOUSTON — A major crash involving multiple vehicles — including an 18-wheeler and several motorcycles — has shut down the I-10 East Freeway westbound on Houston’s east side Friday morning.

The crash happened in the 10900 block of East Freeway, near John Ralston Road, according to Houston police. Officers said the westbound lanes are temporarily closed and urged drivers to avoid the area.

Lt. Terry Garza with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said the crash may involve as many as six vehicles, including four motorcycles and an 18-wheeler.

Houston police, Houston Fire Department, HCSO deputies, and the HCSO MAP unit are all on scene.

What drivers should know

  • All westbound lanes of I-10 East are closed near John Ralston Road.
  • Expect major backups on the East Freeway heading into Houston.
  • Exit John Ralston Road or Normandy Road and use the service road to bypass the closure, according to HCSO Lt. Garza.

Alternate routes for drivers

  • Exit before Mercury Drive and use the East Freeway frontage road.
  • Take the 610 East Loop southbound to connect with Highway 225.
  • For longer westbound trips into Houston, consider Highway 90 as an alternate corridor.

Looking ahead

It’s not yet clear how long the freeway will remain closed. Crews from multiple agencies continue to investigate and clear the scene.
