The student was taken to the hospital, but is expected to be ok.
HOUSTON — A Houston Independent School District student was hit by a vehicle Tuesday morning after being dropped off near Lamar High School, suffering non-life-threatening injuries that required hospitalization.
The incident occurred on Eastside Street at Westheimer near the high school campus, according to HISD officials. The student was transported to a local hospital following the accident.
The Houston Police Department responded to the scene and is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision.
It’s the second time that a student has been struck by the car in the area in a month.
Video showed a teen who was hit by an SUV on August 21. He was injured, but expected to recover.
After the August crash, the City of Houston quickly pledged resources to protect students crossing Westheimer. Mayor John Whitmire visited the intersection on August 20, sharing photos with the media of the mayor pointing at the busy road next to the busy school.
HISD acknowledged Tuesday that traffic safety concerns around Lamar High School. The district emphasized that student safety remains their top priority and expressed openness to additional safety measures the City of Houston might implement to improve pedestrian safety near the campus.
The school district noted that crosswalk infrastructure in the area falls under city management rather than district control. HISD currently provides crossing guards at elementary and middle school locations to support safe student passage to school.
No additional details about the vehicle involved or the specific circumstances of the accident were immediately available as the police investigation continues.
