Truck Hits Houston Ave Bridge on I-10 Katy Freeway

The Katy Freeway was backed up eastbound at Houston Avenue Monday night.

HOUSTON — It happened yet again.

Houston police said a truck on the Katy Freeway struck the bridge at Houston Avenue. The eastbound lanes were mostly blocked off.

Houston TranStar reported the incident involved heavy truck and a lost load. There were no injuries reported but hazmat crews headed out to the crash..

The right shoulder, right lane and center lane were blocked as of 7:35 p.m.

This follows a string of recent incidents at the same bridge.

Saturday night, a semi-truck hauling an excavator hit the Houston Avenue bridge on I-10 eastbound, which closed some lanes for hours.

Just days before that, a truck struck the bridge, causing the big rig to jackknife and lose its load. Traffic was backed up for over six hours. The woman behind the truck whose car was damaged shared her story only on KHOU 11 News.

TxDOT Houston told KHOU 11 News this weekend they have reported at least five strikes of the Houston Avenue bridge this year that led to an emergency response.

Additionally, a detection system has found that the bridge, just three inches above the national requirement, has been hit over 60 times. TxDOT said not all strikes led to lane closures.

As for the Houston Ave. bridge, it will be demolished as part of the I-10 White Oak Bayou project, which will elevate the highway lanes. That project is estimated to be finished in January 2027.
