City of La Marque says it’s running out of money

City leaders say they’ve already taken measures to save money and are presenting a plan to generate revenue.

LA MARQUE, Texas — The city of La Marque is sounding the alarm. City leaders say they could run out of money in two weeks.

In a message to residents posted on Facebook Monday, officials said the shortfall stems from what leaders described as “a lack of sufficient revenues coming in and overspending in key areas over the past years.”

“In short, the city has been spending more than it has been bringing in,” according to the post.

City administrators said they’ve already frozen some vacant positions and cut non-essential expenses to save money.

At Monday night’s council meeting, leaders were expected to present a financial recovery plan that includes a proposed tax adjustment. If approved, that change would allow La Marque to secure a short-term loan to keep services running until property tax revenues arrive in the new year.

The city emphasized it is committed to transparency and urged residents to turn to official channels for updates instead of online rumors.

Dear La Marque Community,
We want to take a moment to speak directly to you, our residents, about an important challenge…

Officials also asked residents to direct questions to the City Manager’s Office at 409-938-9211 or by email at b.holly@cityoflamarque.org.

“La Marque has a proud history, and together, we will get through this,” the post reads. “This is a time for unity, not fear.”
