A pickup truck hit a power pole and gas main in north Harris County, sparking a fire and road closure. The driver fled the scene.
HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A fiery crash in north Harris County shut down a busy road for hours Sunday after deputies said a pickup truck slammed into a power pole and gas main before going up in flames.
It happened around 5 a.m. along Atascocita Road in the Humble area, and the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said the driver is still on the run.
“When we arrived on scene and found a white pickup fully engulfed in flames that had struck a power pole and a gas main, which was on fire,” Lt. Wheeler with HCSO said.
Hours later, fire crews were still dousing hot spots while CenterPoint Energy worked to repair the ruptured gas line.
Deputies said the driver who caused the crash ran off and has yet to be found.
The crash also forced Higher Expectations Community Church to cancel its Sunday service.
“Hopefully, our members will find a place to worship today with some other friends in and around the area as they get this situation under control,” said Pastor Bryant Lee.
Lee came to check on his church early Sunday morning after getting a call from authorities.
“I just figured it was a simple accident, but to hear a pole was hit, a gas line was hit, and the person who did all this took off on foot was kind of shocking and alarming,” the pastor said. “As a lead pastor, you’re always disappointed when you can’t gather with your local church body, so it is a big blow.”
Lee said he’s simply thankful no one was hurt and is hopeful that deputies will soon find the driver.
“Hopefully, the person who did this, the sheriff’s department will be able to track down and get them some help,” he said.
At last check, investigators were still working to check the truck’s VIN, hoping it leads them to the driver.
