Houston recycling plant fire under investigation on Quitman Street

Firefighters rushed to Quitman Street after flames broke out at a recycling plant. No injuries were reported, but the cause remains unknown.

HOUSTON — Firefighters responded overnight to a fire at a recycling plant on the east side.

According to Houston fire officials, the fire broke out just before midnight Monday at the facility located at 2015 Quitman Street. Flames were seen coming from a section of the plant as crews worked with a crane, which appeared to spark stronger flames at one point.

The plant specializes in recycling scrap metal including copper, aluminum, steel and lead car batteries. Investigators are still working to determine exactly what materials were involved in the start of the fire.

A pile of burning metal was spotted near four of the large water tanks that firefighters used to help put out the flames. By early morning, the fire appeared to be out, but investigators were still on the scene reviewing the cause.

The Houston Fire Department reports no injuries linked to the fire.

Meanwhile, a check of the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) website shows no air quality alerts in the area following the incident.
