Construction causes delays, concerns for parents at Huffman ISD school

The district points to ongoing construction work along FM 2100, which some believe has taken too long.

HUFFMAN, Texas — Twice a day, along two-lane FM 2100 in Huffman, traffic stops at Falcon Ridge Elementary School’s main entrance unless you’re one of the drivers going the wrong way to get around it.

“Zero cares in the world,” said one parent.  “Every day going and coming to pick the kids up, it’s like this.”

According to Huffman ISD, pickup and drop-off practices and procedures at Falcon Ridge remain the same as in previous years, but the delays and concerns this year are primarily due to the ongoing construction along FM 2100.

This particular stretch, north of FM 1960, will eventually become a divided four-lane road.

“We are in active communication with both Webber Construction and TxDOT to explore solutions that will help ease traffic flow during peak times. In the meantime, we encourage our families and community members to remain patient and keep safety as the top priority during arrival and dismissal,” the district said in a statement.

“I understand the frustration; I live out here,” said community activist Vernon Reed.

Others have been especially concerned by the pace of construction work.

Reed recently met with State Representative Charles Cunningham and a TxDOT official in Austin, which Cunningham’s office confirmed.

“We’ve got new developments coming in, you’ve got more kids coming in,” said Reed.  “You know, it’s inevitable that we’re going to grow. And when you have more people, you know, you’re going to have issues.”

He said it will be much better once the widening project is complete.

We saw crews actively working on Monday afternoon.

“One-thousand percent it’s going to be better,” said Reed.

But, for now, issues in the interim may not slow down.

We requested an updated timeline on the project from TxDOT.
