Firefighters rescue woman, 3-year-old child from house fire on Redding Springs

When the first crews got to the home, bystanders told the firefighters there was a family trapped inside the house.

HOUSTON — Firefighters rescued a woman and a child from a burning house early Sunday morning in northwest Houston, according to the Northwest Volunteer Fire Department.

Firefighters were called to the burning house on Redding Springs Lane, which is just north of Fallbrook Drive, around 3 a.m.

When the first crews got to the home, bystanders told the firefighters there was a family trapped inside the house. The firefighters worked their way through the house and found the woman and a 3-year-old child on the second floor of the home.

EMS started performing CPR on the two and rushed them to an area hospital, where they were listed as being in critical condition.

The fire department said three other family members were taken to a hospital for smoke inhalation. Those three are expected to be OK. There were two other people in the home that were unharmed.

NWVFD said the fire was quickly knocked out. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Officials said the home had burglar bars for protection, which may have slowed down firefighters’ response and slowed down an escape. Brandi Dumas with the Harris County Fire Marshal’s Office said families should take burglar bars into consideration when coming up with an emergency plan.

“We want to make sure that we’re not trapping ourselves in whenever there is a fire,” Dumas said. “So, making sure that you have an escape plan, meaning a way out and knowing what to do if a fire does occur in your house.”
