Houston’s July job losses are bigger than the historical trend

Houston lost 30,500 jobs in July, mostly in education and government, with losses larger than the historical July average.

HOUSTON — The Houston region’s job growth numbers were in the negative for July, though that’s not out of the ordinary.

Houston lost 30,500 total jobs in July, bringing total non-farm employment to nearly 3.45 million for the region, according to data from the Texas Workforce Commission. However, the job losses are in line with historical trends for the month of July, the Greater Houston Partnership said.

The region typically sheds thousands of jobs during the month as annual education contracts wrap up. Indeed, education-related job losses accounted for the bulk of the total losses last month. The state and local government services sectors lost 1,200 and 23,700 jobs, respectively, for a total of 24,900, according to the GHP.

While job losses are typical in July, this year’s losses were larger than the historical average, the GHP said.
