State sending inspectors to apartments with rats, safety hazards

The mother of a two-week-old baby said the rats at the Cullen Park Apartments in southeast Houston were even getting into her children’s bedroom.

HOUSTON — Residents of an apartment complex in Sunnyside may finally see something done about rats, flooding, fire hazards and trash issues after complaining to KHOU 11.

KHOU 11 has learned the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs is scheduled to inspect the Cullen Park Apartments on Tuesday.

Adrian Jackson reported that his daughter and her six children had their power cut off by the fire department due to faulty wiring, leaving them in dangerous heat with no alternative housing options.

“I understand the rats and everything but this is an emergency. She’s got six babies in the heat, and the fire department saying that she’s got to get out,” Jackson said.

Alexis and her family, including a two-week-old baby, said issues, including flooding, stopped up sinks, gnats and rodents, forced them to move in with relatives.

“This is the second one that we’ve killed; one was in my closet, but I threw him in the trash. This one is the second one,” Ashley told us on Monday. “My kids’ room, the mice come from out of there, they don’t even want to sleep in there.”

She said it took two days to get action after a toilet overflowed.

“Everything was backed up. The water was on the floor.”

She and other residents received a notice about the state inspection.

“I hope it fixes something because I’m tired of living like this. I want to be at home,” Ashley said.

Management met with residents Friday night in a closed-door meeting after a Houston City Council member questioned them.
