AUSTIN (KXAN) — KXAN meteorologists, on occasion, speak about the warming climate. We give you daily tips on how to save our planet from the perils of climate change. Sometimes we offer tips on how to get children involved in projects like composting and recycling.
It is with that in mind that we wanted to know when is a good time for adults to speak with their children about what climate change is, why it is happening, and what they can do to help mitigate its effects.
Dr. Bradley Berg is a pediatrician with Baylor Scott and White Hospital in Round Rock. He says that children are more in tune with what is going on with the weather. For example, children may have questions about the freezing rain and snow that affected recent winters, to the devastating floods during the July 4th weekend.
Many schools have climate and meteorology sections as part of the science curriculum. Dr. Berg suggests talking to your children about what they learned in these sections.
There is no set number of conversations that need to be held, It’s more organic than anything else, as Dr. Berg explains.
Finally, part of the importance of speaking with your child about climate change is because of what could happen in the future if we don’t reverse the trends that help to create our warming planet.
