Actor Glen Powell surprised Texas Longhorns linebacker Marshall Landwehr with a scholarship, sparking cheers and a viral moment among teammates.
AUSTIN, Texas — Texas Longhorns linebacker Marshall Landwehr learned about his scholarship this week from actor and Austin native Glen Powell.
“Marshall, your hard work has not gone unnoticed,” Powell said in a recorded message played out during a UT Football meeting. Landwehr’s teammates stood up and cheered when they heard the news.
The moment was posted to social media by Texas Football, who congratulated the fifth-year athlete for his achievement with the caption, “Hard work pays off.”
After the announcement, Landwehr spoke to his teammates directly.
“Y’all are part of the biggest reason why I show up everyday,” he said. “Been doing this for five years, it doesn’t get old. Keep working, this is the dream, man.”
Landwehr is a Dallas native who joined the Longhorns in 2021, but did not play his first game with the team until his junior year in 2023.
Last year, he played 13 games with the Longhorns, and he’s preparing for the start of the 2025 season on Aug. 30 against Ohio State University.
Powell studied at UT Austin’s Moody College of Communication but left before graduating to pursue acting.
The 36-year-old actor started his career in the early 2000s, and has since starred in films including “Hidden Figures,” “Anyone But You” and “Twisters.”
Last year, he announced his plans to return to UT Austin with the intent to complete a double major in Spanish and American History.
Powell’s latest film, a sci-fi thriller called “The Running Man,” is set to release in theaters on Nov. 7.
