Houston Police Officers Union sues Kroger over drained gift cards

The union says Kroger didn’t do enough to keep the cards safe from scammers.

HOUSTON — The Houston Police Union is suing Kroger.

The Houston Chronicle reports Union president Doug Griffith bought a handful of Visa gift cards as a reward for members. The total value was $400.

But when the members finally got around to using the cards two months later, they found out there was only a very small amount on them. It turns out the union fell victim to scammers who spent the money before the buyers realized anything was wrong.

The lawsuit claims the store wasn’t properly set up to prevent scammers from accessing card info.

Back in June, Kroger renewed its request for dismissal.

This stems from a story we first reported in February of 2024. In that story, Griffith told us he contacted the store and was told he needed to reach out to his credit card company.

So how can you make sure you’re not buying a drained gift card?  According to AARP, look for signs of tampering. Also, buy electronic gift cards directly from the store’s website or try to buy only ones that are kept behind a store counter.
