Texas A&M player arrested in hit-and-run crash, College Station police say

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — A Texas A&M football player was arrested and charged with failure to stop or return stemming from a hit-and-run crash in June, according to College Station police.

According to an arrest report, defensive back Dalton Brooks, 20, was driving a U-Haul truck when he got into a crash with another car at the intersection of Harvey Road and Earl Rudder Frontage Road West on June 25. Police said that after the crash, Brooks immediately drove off in the U-Haul and was later pulled over by College Station police nearly 2 miles from where the accident took place.

The officer who pulled Brooks over reported significant damage to the front end of the U-Haul, including the driver’s side headlight hanging by wires. The officer also reported that it appeared the airbags had been deployed.

When asked why he fled the scene, Brooks reportedly told investigators he had panicked and was attempting to return the U-Haul. He reportedly said he didn’t know what to do, including not knowing to call 911 to report the crash.

Police said the other car was declared a total loss, with the damage totaling $19,191.

They said video from a nearby food truck showed the U-Haul crashing into the other car and immediately driving off.

Brooks was booked into the Brazos County Jail on August 1 and was released on a $2,000 bond that same day.

KHOU 11 reached out to Texas A&M for a statement on the incident.

“We’re aware of the recent incident involving Dalton Brooks and are in the process of gathering all the facts,” the university said in a statement. “The matter will be handled internally.”

According to the team’s website, Brooks played in all 13 games of the 2024 season, his sophomore year. They said he “finished the second season on the team with 59 tackles and top-five on the team with 5.5 tackles for loss.”
