Omar Marzouk, 38, is charged with murder in the Wednesday, July 30, shooting death of 32-year-old Jimmy Arevalo outside a convenience store near Highway 288.
HOUSTON — A man charged with the shooting death of a contractor outside a convenience store near Highway 288 made his first court appearance Friday morning.
Omar Marzouk, 38, is charged with murder in the July 30 shooting death of 32-year-old Jimmy Arevalo. He was arrested on Thursday, hours after the Houston Police Department released his photo to the media.
The deadly shooting happened around 12:40 a.m. Wednesday, July 30, on Calumet Street, between Southmore and North MacGregor Way.
Arevalo was a contractor who stopped at the store to pressure wash kitchen equipment.
Surveillance video obtained by KHOU 11 from a witness shows the truck approaching the victim. The shooter walks up to Arevalo and the two appear to exchange words.
“The witness stated that you arrived at the location and complained to the complainant about the noise from the pressure washing,” the magistrate judge said during Marzouk’s Friday court appearance.
After pushing the victim, the killer pulled out a gun and fired at point-blank range. KHOU 11 has chosen not to show the moment the gunman opens fire due to the graphic nature of the video.
The gunman drove off in a gray Toyota Tundra.
The victim’s brother, also a contractor, was inside the store and ran outside after hearing the shots. He found his brother covered in blood and called 911. Arevalo died at the scene.
We don’t know yet if Marzouk and the victim knew each other, and the motive remains unclear.
Noting that Marzouk tried to sell his vehicles and other belongings after the killing, the judge set his bond at $500,000.
