Houston Airports announces a new upgrade at IAH Terminal C to meet growing demand before the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
HOUSTON — Houston Airports has expanded the rideshare pickup zone at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) Terminal C, more than doubling its size to accommodate growing demand ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The expansion is a direct response to traveler feedback and aligns with Houston Mayor John Whitmire’s call for user-friendly upgrades that improve airport operations, according to Houston Airports.
“Mayor Whitmire asked Houston Airports to rededicate itself to improve passenger experience through common-sense upgrades. This expansion delivers,” said Jim Szczesniak, director of aviation for Houston Airports. “We’re making it easier and faster for travelers to meet their rides as part of our recommitment to providing world-class service at Bush Airport and ensuring Houston remains a global gateway we can all be proud of.”
The new design more than doubles the linear curb space and doubles the size of the zone’s entrance and exit. It allows for smoother traffic flow, reduces wait times, and helps minimize congestion. The enhanced area also includes upgraded Wi-Fi to support reliable communication between passengers and drivers.
The project is part of a broader modernization effort to improve curbside operations at both Bush and Hobby airports. Since opening permanent Terminal E Departures and Arrivals curbs in December 2024, curbside congestion at Bush Airport dropped 75% between April and June compared with the same period last year.
Additional improvements made this summer include 36 new EcoPark shuttles at IAH, revamped rental car shuttle operations, and a fully cashless parking system at both major airports. Hobby Airport also added a shaded rideshare pickup area with organized queuing and new benches to increase passenger comfort and efficiency.
