Hill Country nonprofit distributes $200k to flood victims using grant funds

KERR COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) — Center Point Alliance for Progress has been able to write checks to families impacted by the Fourth of July weekend floods, providing immediate financial relief for families who are trying to rebuild.

The nonprofit based in the small town of Center Point along the Guadalupe River received a $200,000 grant from the Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country. The foundation announced last week, it raised more than $60 million for flood victims.

According to the Community Foundation, it began distributing funds in the form of grants to 35 nonprofits providing disaster relief in flood-affected areas.

“I think anyone who is driving through this destruction from the Guadalupe River, it feels daunting at times–the task ahead, but with just a little bit that we’re able to give you feels like you’re a part of the hope,” Anna Love, a committee member with Center Point, said. “So it really just means everything that we’re able to do it.”

Center Point said it was approved for its grant in less than 48 hours. Since then, it says it’s been able to distribute $2,500 to 37 families so far. It said the turnaround time on giving the money directly to families is about 24 hours.

“One of the big things is, will the victims ever see the money from the foundation and and we were, we’re living proof that it is actually going right back to the victims,” Love said.

Center Point said its application process will be open until August 6.

“We are vetting people, so that not just anybody can come and claim that they had. We have people on the ground looking at the damage,” Susan Walker, Treasurer of Center Point Alliance for Progress, said.
