Kendall County is the first in Texas to receive state funding for flood debris removal

KENDALL COUNTY, Texas – Texas has agreed to take over debris removal in parts of Kendall County ravaged by floods earlier this month, commissioners announced in a meeting on Tuesday.

Kendall County residents are dealing with large heaps of trees and debris left behind by a swollen Guadalupe River.

Commissioners said Kendall is the first county to receive state funding for debris removal on public and private property in connection with the Central Texas floods.

Kendall County commissioners discussed several other flood-related measures during the meeting:

  • County workers will be paid overtime for the extra hours they worked on July 4. So far, taxpayers are expected to cover more than $60,000 in overtime pay.

  • The county’s burn ban will remain in effect.

  • Commissioners also approved giving staff the authority to apply for any state grants made available to assist communities after the flood. This approval allows staff to bypass the usual red tape that often slows down the grant application process.

Grant coordinator Christina Peese said she is working to find grants for flood relief and funding for flood warning systems.

The county’s animal shelter is seeking grants to help care for more than two dozen animals brought in after the flood. Some of the animals have injuries that will require thousands of dollars in treatment.

After the floods, there has been an increase in animal injuries and strays, according to county commissioners.
