AUSTIN (KXAN) — A group of Central Texas flood survivors, senators and community leaders will rally at the Texas State Capitol on Monday to push for legislation that could save lives during severe weather.
A rally, organized by Hands Off Central Texas, is happening on the first day of Texas’ 89th special session. Those gathering are asking for HB 13 to be passed. The bill would create a statewide, comprehensive and strategic plan to help local governments with emergency communication systems. That plan would include outdoor warning systems.
The bill failed in Texas’ 89th Regular Legislative Session. However, Gov. Greg Abbott has expressed the need to revisit topics related to warning systems and state preparedness.
Speakers of the event include:
- Senator Sarah Eckhardt, Texas Senate District 14
- Rep. Vikki Goodwin, Texas House
- Alexandra Haddix, 50501 Austin lead organizer
- Brigitte Bandit, Advocate and Drag Performer
- Chas Moore, Executive Director, Austin Justice Coalition
