“God left me here for a reason,” says the Third Ward neighbor who says she narrowly escaped death this morning.
HOUSTON — A woman has been detained for questioning after another woman was shot and killed Tuesday morning at an apartment complex in Houston’s Third Ward, according to police.
The incident occurred at a residential complex where residents say a routine morning quickly turned into a terrifying ordeal. The shooting happened off Griggs Road, north of Alt-90.
Porsha Thompson, a neighbor, said she was preparing breakfast in her unit when a bullet tore through her apartment.
“I was hungry, so I got up and said, ‘Let me start our breakfast.’ As it was cooking, I said, ‘Let me go check the weather,’ but I didn’t make it,” Thompson said. “I forgot about that weather.”
Before she could reach the front door, debris from her living room wall struck her in the face — the result of a bullet that had entered through a neighboring window, passed through a wall and barely missed her.
“It was beating me up in the face, really,” she said. “The detectives told me, ‘If you were a tad bit taller…’ Thank God for the height I am. I would’ve got hit.”
The bullet was reportedly fired from the second floor of a building approximately 100 yards away, police said.
“God left me here for a reason,” Thompson said. “No weapon formed against me shall prosper.”
After the gunfire ended, police found an elderly woman dead on a staircase in the building where the shots originated.
“She didn’t come here to hurt nobody,” said Audrey Ware, a resident of the complex. “She’s been coming here for years.”
Neighbors identified the victim as a woman in her 70s who lived nearby and regularly visited the complex to collect aluminum cans and bottles for recycling.
“She was a nice lady,” Ware added. “Very pleasant.”
Authorities have not yet released the name of the victim. The investigation is ongoing, and police have not announced any charges as of Tuesday evening.
