Houston-area couple killed by suspected drunk driver on W. Lake Houston Parkway

John Nathan Dool, 40, was arrested after the Sunday evening crash that killed Curtis Van Deist, 60, and Catherine Van Deist, 66.

HOUSTON — The driver blamed for a deadly weekend crash on West Lake Houston Parkway has been charged with two counts of intoxication manslaughter. 

The crash happened south of Kingwood on Sunday, July 13, at approximately 5:45 p.m.

According to the Houston Police Department, John Nathan Dool, 40, was heading westbound at a high rate of speed on West Sam Houston Parkway in a white Dodge Ram pickup truck.

Curtis Van Diest, 60, and his wife, Catherine Van Diest, 66, were in a white Cadillac XT5 heading northbound on Magnolia Cove Drive. When they pulled out of a stop sign at the intersection of West Lake Houston Parkway, Dool slammed into them, according to HPD. 

Dool’s pickup pushed the victim’s vehicle several feet before crashing into a pole and turning over on its side.

The victims died at the scene. According to her Facebook page, Catherine was a substitute teacher in Humble ISD.

Dool was taken to an area hospital to be treated for injuries. Tests showed he was impaired. 

The investigation is ongoing.
