21-year-old suspect arrested in south Austin parking lot homicide

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A 21-year-old man has been arrested after police say they found a man who was attacked and killed in a south Austin parking lot.

The Austin Police Department identified the man who was killed July 1 as Mark Barbosa, 23. Austin police said last week they received calls that a person had been hit by a car, and they responded to the parking lot at 3003 S Lamar Blvd. at 10:16 p.m. In its release Monday, the department described the suspect approaching Barbosa and an “altercation escalated into Barbosa being physically assaulted” and falling next to a car.

Police said the suspect, his girlfriend and his friend all left the scene in that car. Both Barbosa and the suspect were in the parking lot to pick up their girlfriends.

Barbosa was pronounced dead at 10:40 p.m. and his death was ruled a homicide because of blunt force trauma, APD said.

Jacob Turner, 21, faces a first-degree murder charge. He was booked in the Travis County jail the day after Barbosa died and remains there on a $100,000 bond, according to jail records.

KXAN has reached out to Turner’s attorney and will update this story when we receive a response.
