Goethe-Institut revives its Houston presence with a new office set to open on October 2.
HOUSTON — A German government-supported cultural institute is making a comeback in Houston after 25 years.
Goethe-Institut, an over-70-year-old nonprofit that promotes and teaches German culture and language across the world, has signed an office lease at Lovett Commercial’s downtown mixed-use development Post Houston to reestablish itself in the Bayou City. The office is slated to open on Oct. 2.
The Houston location will be a branch of the Goethe-Institut Chicago and employ two people: a program coordinator and a communication and administration officer, who have yet to be hired, said Leonhard Emmerling, institute director in Chicago.
“It will not be a full-fledged institute with its own space,” he said. “With the event space, we will have the opportunity to rent — at minimum cost — space in the Post.”
Programming will be up to the local team. Events typically include lectures, book readings, film screenings and concerts.
